    Te Hekenga a Rangi

Te Arawa descend from Puhaorangi, a celestial being who descended upon Hawaiki from the heavens. Captivated by the beauty of Te Kuraimonoa and born unto him was Ohomairangi; paramount chief of Hawaiki and the original name for the Te Arawa tribe prior to their arrival in Aotearoa, New Zealand (Ngāti Ohomairangi).

We can trace this line of whakapapa down to Houmaitawhiti, prominent chief of his time in Hawaiki and father of Tamatekapua; the Captain of Ngā-Rākau-Mā-Tahi-Pu-a-Atuamatua later known as the Te Arawa waka.

Tamatekapua is famous for his accolades as a strategist, haututu (mischief) and along with his kin, are responsible for many place names around the North Island; from Rangitoto (Te Rangi i toto ai te ihu a Tamatekapua), Lake Rotorua (Te Rotorua-nui-a-Kahumatamomoe), Taupō (Taupō-nui-a-Tia) and many more.

From Tamatekapua we trace whakapapa down to Rangitihi who is father to "The eight beating hearts of Te Arawa" - Te Arawa can retrace their whakapapa to Hawaiki through at least one of his eight children.

At Te Papa Tākaro o Te Arawa, we take pride in being Te Arawa and applying the knowledge of our ancestors to our mahi.  If it weren't for this line of whakapapa and their knowledge, skill, strength and capacity - we wouldn't be here today.  We acknowledge that we have a lot to learn from our tupuna and that our whakapapa tell us so much about what we should be doing and where we should be heading in our mahi to help our people.
